This paper was elaborated in the framework of the CROLET project “Création d’opportunités d’emplois à travers l’économie Territoriale – Appui au développement local dans les Gouvernorats de Sidi Bouzid et Kebili en Tunisie”, financed by the Italian Government, with the aim to contribute to the reduction of illegal migration from Tunisia through local socio-economic development processes, and implemented in the governorates of Kebili and Sidi Bouzid.
In the framework of the abovementioned project, four value chains were prioritised, according to their impact on the local economy and their development potential:
- Dates and garden products (tomatoes and cucumber) for Kebili governorate;
- Olives and garden products (tomatoes and chilli) for Sidi Bouzid governorate.
In coherence with the above-mentioned statement, the objective of this paper is to recommend strategic guidelines and a plan of action for the development of a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable HORTICULTURE value chain in KebilI; specifically for tomato and cucumber.
In order to reach this objective, this paper first provides an assessment of the value chain potential and needs and, on the basis of this assessment, it proposes some strategic guidelines for its inclusive and sustainable development. Both the assessment and the elaboration of strategic guidelines follow “RESCO” (REsources for Sustainable COmpetitiveness), a participatory methodology that the ILS LEDA Institute has been applying in 13 countries during the last 20 years.
